🧘‍♀️ Why Yoga Isn’t About Flexibility

When people hear the word yoga, the first image that often comes to mind is someone effortlessly twisting into a pretzel or balancing in a headstand. It’s no surprise that many people feel intimidated or believe they’re “not flexible enough” to even begin.

But here’s the truth: Yoga isn’t about flexibility.

It’s about presence. It’s about listening. And most of all, it’s about coming home to yourself.

Yoga Meets You Where You Are

You don’t need to touch your toes to practice yoga. You don’t need to be pain-free, strong, or bendy. You just need to show up — with your breath, your body, and a willingness to be kind to yourself.

I work with many students who live with chronic pain, mobility challenges, or conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis. Their yoga practice doesn’t look like what you see on Instagram — and that’s the beauty of it. Yoga can be adapted for every body. That includes practicing in a chair, using props, or simply lying down and focusing on the breath.

It's About Connection, Not Perfection

True yoga begins with awareness. It’s about noticing your breath, your thoughts, your sensations — and choosing to respond with care rather than judgment. That’s why we begin with the foundational teachings of the Yamas and Niyamas — guidelines that teach us how to live with compassion, truthfulness, and self-care.

Flexibility of the body may come over time — but more importantly, yoga helps us create flexibility of the mind and heart. It teaches us how to breathe through discomfort, release what no longer serves us, and meet ourselves with grace.

A Practice of Healing

If you’re dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, or simply feel disconnected from your body, yoga can be a powerful tool for healing — but only when practiced gently and with deep respect for your unique experience.

You don’t need to change your body to start yoga.

Yoga helps you change your relationship with your body — and that’s where the transformation begins.
